In the first chapter Jefferson a 21 year old African American is caught at a robbery with three dead people. He is put on trial. his layer doesn't view him as a man in fact he say "i would just as fast put a hog in the electric chair." he is found guilty by his jury and is sentenced to death by the electric chair. In the second chapter an African American school teacher named grant who knows the god mother of Jefferson go's home to see his aunt.
