Where are the women in science and math?
The president of Harvard University upset many people when he explained why he thought there are fewer women than men in math and science jobs.
People suggested the women have less natural talent, women spend more time with their families and fewer hours at their jobs than men do. They think that the educational context in which students learn math and science plays an important role. Woman in science and math programs reported on a survey that their professors favored male students and preferred men’s learning styles. When they are in math classrooms teachers pick male students more often. Research indicates that men respond questions more confidently, quickly, and aggressively. Women say that when the teachers asked them questions they were interrupted more often then men. Women think that the most important variable affecting math performance is expectations. Girls and Boys benefit from teachers believing in their math abilities.
Why do you think there are more male scientists and engineers than female ones?
What should we do about this situation?
